About Cairnryan

Port Cairnryan is located on the northern shore of Loch Ryan in the south-west Scotland. It's proximity to Northern Ireland, offering a shorter crossing to Larne, led P & O Ferries to develop a roll-on roll-off terminus there.

Cairnryan was a Number Two military port during World War II. At the end of the war, the Atlantic U-boats that had surrendered in the Loch Ryan were sunk in the seas from here and a few British aircraft carriers were also decommissioned here.

Cairnryan, the village of white houses, stands on the headland of Loch Ryan. A sandbank called 'The Scar' runs down the west shore of Loch Ryan, on the opposite bank from Cairnryan village. The places of tourist interest include Lochryan House, Loch Ryan Lighthouse built in 1847 and an archaeological site of Milldown Hill.
