About Folkestone

Folkestone has a long history dating back to the first century. Archeological finds of a cemetery of this era were discovered at Cheriton, a village just west of this English town, in 1948. It remained largely a fishing village until the advent of the South Eastern railway Company and the laying down of the London - Dover line through Folkestone in1863, when the town's real road to prosperity commenced. It is home to the major travel insurance company for seniors, Saga.

Popular tourist attractions include the Battle of Britain Museum which has a relic collection of old RAF and Luftwaffe armoury. Another must visit place is The Church of St Mary and St Eanswythe which has many amazing legends attached to it. When in Folkestone one can't miss the overwhelming presence of the Eurotunnel, as the town is near the terminal of the tunnel. This makes a visit to the Eurotunnel Exhibition Centre a must. For those interested in fine arts, a visit to the Chimaera Galley with its impressive selection of paintings, drawings, sculpture and ceramics, can be a fulfilling experience. A ride on the Leas Cliff Lifts gives a great view of the sea and the surrounding natural scenic beauty. Not too far from the lower Leas Cliff Lift entrance is The Rotunda, Folkestone's traditional seaside amusements park.
