This old fishing port is a gateway to the popular seaside resort Morecambe and the city of Lancaster. It offers one of the best Anglo-Viking site in the Northwest.

Some buildings in Heysham pre-date the time of Doomsday Book which mentions the village. Tourists get fascinated by the ruins of the ancient chapel St Patrick's and Viking graves hewn into the rock, St Peter's church with its curious hog-back tombstone and stained glass, the new Heritage Centre, public gardens.

The village is also well known for its non-alcoholic nettle beer.
