About Newhaven

Relics and pottery of the Stone Age has been found around the Castle Hill pointing to a history of Newhaven which dates back to many thousand years. The name Newhaven is said to have derived from ‘Meeching’ as the Saxons called it, when they arrived in 477 AD, after the withdrawal of the Romans. This English port town became a fully navigable harbour after the construction of piers at the eastern and western sides of the harbour was carried out from 1630 onwards. Lord Palmerston, fearing invasion by the French, commissioned a fortress to protect the harbour entrance and work began on the Newhaven Fort in 1864.

With a history as interesting as Newhaven’s, a visit to Newhaven Fort becomes a must. Enjoy the natural splendour at the gardens of the Paradise Park along with a unique shopping experience. A separate attraction at the Paradise Park is the Newhaven Local & Maritime Museum which has a huge collection of maritime memorabilia and artifacts which also gives an insight into Newhaven’s history.
