About Southampton

Southampton port is roughly situated in the centre of the southern coast of England in Hampshire, lying midway between Bournemouth and Portsmouth. The evidence of Southampton as a Roman and Saxon settlement can be found everywhere in the modern city. The remnants of its wall defense are visible in the gatehouse of Bargate, plumb in city centre. Unfortunately, much of this heritage was lost in the bombing during World War Two.

The city displays several art galleries as well as museums. Some tourist attractions include the Wool House (turned into Maritime Museum), Medieval Merchants House, God's House Tower (turned into Museum of Archaeology) and Tudor House Museum. The Mayflower Theatre opens up musicals, ballets and operas to the artistic taste.

The 19th century Central Parks which are listed in English Heritage’s register are worth taking a look at. It is some experience to do shopping in the West Quay Shopping Centre.

The yearly Southampton Boat Show will be held in September 2008. The University of Southampton and Southampton Solent University offer a great learning opportunity. While Oxford Street offers high end restaurants, Bedford Place offers a varied culinary experience.
