About Stranraer

Stranraer town lies on the shore of Lake Ryan in the west of Dumfries. It is located on the northern side of isthmus where the hammerhead peninsula of Rhins of Galloway joins the mainland. The port was developed around 1820s and established in 1862 with the advent of railway.

The medieval Castle of St John, which is a tower house built during the times of Covenanter persecution in the 1680s, is within walking distance from the ferry terminal and has steep spiral stairs inside. The town boasts of several gardens around the town like Ardwell Gardens, Castle Kennedy Gardens which are the site for the ruins of Castle Kennedy and Lochinch Castle, Glenwhan Gardens, Logan Botanic Garden which is the southernmost beach and RSPB bird reserve (about 14 miles south of Stranraer). The Southern Upland Way is a 212 miles of coastal walk between Portpatrick and Cockburnspath. Wigtown which is to the east of Stranraer is Scotland’s National Book Town. One can also review the history of port in the Stranraer Museum. Galloway Wildlife conservation Park is about 49 miles towards the east of Stranraer.

Also, Caledonian Cheese Company has a large creamery in the town and makes Stranraer a home to ‘Seriously Strong Cheese’.
