Cheap Ferry Crossings » Destinations » Boulogne Sur Mer Boulogne Sur MerBoulogne-sur-Mer is a port city in northern France. It is just 34 miles away from Dover if you take the Speed Ferries. Boulogne played a significant role in the French history especially during the Middle Ages when an important treaty, The Peace of Boulogne, came into force in 1550 to end the war of England with Scotland and France. Amongst Boulogne’s many places of interest is the basilica, Boulogne Cathedral (Notre-Dame de Boulogne), which was built in the 19th century as a symbol of the revival of the French Catholic Church after the Revolution, when many churches were destroyed. It also has an interesting legend attached to it which says that in about 633, when St Omer was a bishop, a mysterious boat carrying a luminous statue of the Virgin Mary appeared in the estuary of the river Liane at Boulogne which had no oars, sails, or sailors. The local folk installed the statue in their church. Soon miracles were reported around the town. As a remembrance to the happening a procession is taken out of a replica of the Virgin Mary statue. Added to this astounding history of the Cathedral are the crypts dating back to the Roman times. The Castle Museum (Boulogne Château-Musée) which houses collections on various themes like ethnographic objects from the Egyptian culture and the Canadian Eskimo masks to name a few. Another attraction which belongs to the present era is the Nausicaa, an amazing place where visitors can discover the marine environment. A visit to the centre is entertaining and educational. The exhibits at the Centre focus on the relationship between Man and the Sea. The Maison de la Beurière, an authentic fisherman’s house built in 1870, is now a small museum which showcases the lives of the fisherman family during the year 1900. A festival is organised each September to celebrate the sea-going traditions. A stroll in the fortified Old Town is an enjoyable experience, especially in the Rue de Lille and in Godefrey de Bouillon square, with lively pavement cafes, restaurants, shops selling interesting items and restored old buildings.
