Cheap Ferry Crossings » Destinations » Calais CalaisCalais is situated in northern France, just 34 miles from Dover, across the English Channel. The proximity to Dover is so evident that one can see the White Cliffs of Dover from the Calais coast on a clear day. It was a British enclave on French soil between 1347 and 1558. Apart from the most popular attractions, which are the availability of cheap alcohol products and tobacco due to the low French taxes, Calais has several places of interest to visit which include the Pier and lighthouse on the Calais seafront, the Flemish Renaissance style built town hall which can be seen from the sea and the Fine Art and Lace Museum. The Six Burghers monument are situated directly in front of the town hall. Rodin completed the sculpture and it was installed for public viewing in 1895. It represents six noblemen during the rule of Philip VI of France who surrendered to England's Edward III for self-sacrifice, in order to save the townsfolk, as Edward lay siege of the city on August1347. Côte d'Opale, the beach, is known for its stunning landscapes from which many artists like Carolus-Duran and Maurice Boitel drew inspiration for their famous works. Cape Blanc Nez' and 'Cape Gris Nez are the cliffs on Calais beach which stand parallel to Dover’s White Cliffs as if to compete with the one’s across the Channel.
