Cheap Ferry Crossings » Destinations » Dieppe DieppeDieppe in France is witness to many historical events like the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 when a large number of Huguenot citizens fled abroad. In 1942 the Allied forces consisting of largely Canadian soldiers tried to gain control over the German occupied Dieppe port by drawing Luftwaffe into open battle. No major objective was achieved as the Allies suffered heavy human casualties and also lost l39 planes. Dieppe being a port is so much intertwined with the word marine that you can’t miss a visit to Estran Cité de la Mer a museum which has exhibits that cover the shipping, fishing, geography, and the history of the town. You can get a sense of the bygone era as you explore the Château-Musée de Dieppe (Dieppe Castle Museum) where fine art and carvings are exhibited in the well preserved castle building with the most interesting access which is through the tower based in the Square du Canada. Pay homage to the Allied Forces martyrs at the Petit Théâtre Municipal which serves as a memorial to the Dieppe raid. Another attraction is the International Kite Festival which takes place every two years (even years) on the sea front.
