Dunkerque

Dunkerque port is situated, at the northern most tip of France, just 10 kilometres from the Belgian border. Dunkerque, which is now France’s third largest harbour, remained a disputed area amongst Spain, England, the Netherlands and France till 1662 when it finally became a French territory after it was sold to France by the then owner Charles II of England.

The places of interest in Dunkerque are:

  • The Musée Portuaire (Dunkerque Port Museum), which hosts exhibits about history of the port and images of lives of the men and women who worked in it.

  • The Musée des Beaux-Arts (Fine Arts Museum) with its large collection of Flemish, Italian and French paintings and sculptures.

  • The Carnival of Dunkirk which is celebrated from late January to early March to commemorate the colourful send off which once the fishermen used to receive while sailing north to fish in the dangerous icy waters round Iceland.

  • The belfry: A panoramic view of the city of Dunkerque can be enjoyed form its sixth floor.

  • The Leughenaer Tower, an octagonal tower built in 1406 is the oldest monument in Dunkerque. It is said to have been built to fool ships to run ashore, instead of leading them to harbour, so that they could be plundered.
