Le Havre

The second largest port city is appropriately named Le Havre, which in French, means The Harbour. It is in the north-west region of France. Le Havre was a fishing village until 1517 when King Francis-I took the initiative to construct the city and build a harbour named Havre-de-Grâce.

Le Havre has a lot of places to visit which would keep you busy during your visit. The museums and buildings around the town take you on a journey through time as you move from the reminiscent Ship owner’s mansion to an example of modern architecture, Le Volcan. Ship Owner’s mansion is a late 18th century mansion which has a very rare and stunning central well of light flanked by living rooms and corridors. Another architectural marvel is the Town Hall Square which includes a square and apartment blocks and designed to symbolize the rebirth of Le Havre. It has a series of columns placed at regular intervals which give it a Classical look while its tower rising to more than 70 metres is unmistakably modern. Saint-Joseph Church has a 110- metre lantern tower. It serves as a spiritual lighthouse overlooking the town and is dedicated to the victims of the air raids. Fine arts lovers can’t miss the Malraux Museum, built in 1961, is an exquisite glass and metal art museum which houses a superb collection of impressionist paintings. An intriguing sight is the Show apartment, which depicts the interiors in the 1950s, an era which revolutionized the art of housing. Graville Priory is the oldest monument and has a restored altar made of 23-carat gold. Le Volcan is an arts centre designed by the Brazilian architect, Oscar Niemeyer, famous for his contribution in planning of the Brazilian capital city Brasilia.

Le Havre is also a nature lovers’ delight. Japanese Garden is a peaceful abode of greenery relating the Japanese symbolism. Natural History Museum has a large collection of animals, minerals and fossils along with a hive and terrarium of living stick insects.
