Santander

Santander is a coastal town in the Cantabria region of northern Spain. The name Santander is said to have deduced from St. Emiterio. According to a legend he was a martyr whose head was carried to the city.

Santander was home to two mishaps. One was in 1893 when a cargo steamer named Cabo Machichaco from Biscay, which was loaded with dynamite, was set on fire. The vessel was near the port when it exploded causing large scale destruction and claiming 500 human casualties. The other was the fire which broke out in 1940 which ravaged almost the entire city along with its historical quarters. One brave fire fighter died in the incident.

It has a maritime climate, so it is less warm and sunny. However there are a lot of amazing beaches like the Magdalena Beach, Sardinero Beaches, Camel Beach and the Mataleñas Beach.

The Cantabria tourism website gives an insight into the places to visit when in Santander.
